The Spider Rune can always be found in the Slumbering Sanctuary. The Spider Rune is one of the last Runes you’re likely to gain access to, and you’ll need to use the other Runes to reach it, so make sure you’ve grabbed them first.

There are certainly a few differences between the different versions of Dead Cells, the PC version is the safest bet thanks to its relatively low cost and good performance. If you’re tired of reading my insane ramblings about Dead Cells, let me just answer this question with two words: hell yes. It makes the very act of running through levels laying waste to any and all who might stand in your way pretty fun thanks to its high-quality animations and fluid gameplay, and some of the timed doors you might find definitely encourage a certain level of speed and gameplay proficiency. Thanks to the snappiness of the controls, you often feel compelled to rush on over to your next martial challenge, rather than just wait around to take stock of things.ĭead Cells feels like a game designed to be speedrun. Combat is fast, and fights don’t really last more than a few seconds (unless you’re fighting one of the many elite enemies or bosses, of course), so there’s a definite ebb and flow to the gameplay.

It is without a doubt some of the best hack-and-slash gameplay I’ve experienced in a while. Sure, there’s an emphasis on exploration, especially as you unlock new abilities that let you access areas you couldn’t previously get to, but Dead Cells lives and dies by its combat. One of the main things that keeps drawing me back to Dead Cells is the sheer responsiveness of its combat. Thankfully, not only do the Cells you spend carry over between runs, but you also unlock equipment and passive abilities permanently. You have to spend the many Cells you’ll gather up as you plow through hordes of enemies to unlock equipment from these blueprints, and many of these upgrades can hundreds of Cells to acquire.

There’s a definite sense of progression even if you die thanks to the blueprints you’ll invariably find. But Dead Cells doesn’t take everything away from you. Now, of course, we can’t have a roguelite without random level generation and having to start from scratch once you die. You’ll quickly find weapons with weird properties, but numbers aren’t the only things that change almost every weapon in the game has different attack patterns that you’ll need to get used to, and soon enough, you’ll even find your preferred types of weapons, shields and grenades as you play. While you’ll start out the game with the simplest of weapons, Dead Cells starts showing off its depths quite fast. You get two pieces of equipment to use for offensive or defensive items, and two trigger buttons where you can equip gadgets and grenades. The simplicity of Dead Cells is nothing to scoff at. The best way to put this comes down to three simple words: it’s damn good. Sure, 2D side-scrolling roguelite metroidvanias are a dime a dozen in this day and age, but there’s something truly special about Dead Cells that makes me feel compelled to talk about it at length to anyone and everyone who’ll listen. And let me tell you right off the bat, Dead Cells is an incredibly special game. It’s not very often that we write one of these pseudo-review articles for an indie game, but you know it’s something special when we finally do.
