The dramatic play of light and shadow across his face suggests a psychological divide, while the agitated lines emanating from the flame-like hair threaten to engulf him and the composition. In this work, Escobedo portrayed himself in a pained or anxious state. Escobedo, Zalce, and several other Taller artists occasionally employed distortion, dreamlike elements, and uncanny juxtapositions associated with Surrealist art to express personal or political conflict. This psychologically charged self-portrait reveals his openness to new artistic trends such as Surrealism, whose impact was felt in Mexico by the 1930s. Escobedo, the son of a miner, was one of the youngest members of the Taller de Gráfica Popular and a precocious talent who had his first solo exhibition at age 15.
